The Vermont State Board
of Approved Basketball Officials is Board No. 105 of the International
Association of Approved Basketball Officials. Established in 1929,
we're 73 years strong. Much has changed in the game of basketball over
those 73 years and we are constantly working to remain on the leading
edge by developing the best techniques to officiate the game. |

History of IAABO Board 105 |
Due to the efforts of Jack
Lambert, a Teacher Coach at Greensboro High School, and a
member of a Massachusetts Board of Approved Basketball
officials in Lowell, a meeting was held at the University of
Vermont Gym, on Dec. 15, 1928, for the purpose of organizing
a Vermont state Board of Approved Basketball officials.
Seventeen men were present, the majority of whom were
approved Officials, being members of Boards in other States,
and the remainder were men who were attempting to become
Approved Basketball Officials.
Mr. Lambert explained the purpose of the meeting and read a
suggested Constitution and By-Laws for the proposed
organization, which were accepted as read. The Officers
elected were: John F. Lambert, Pres., Harold I. O'Brien of
Rutland, Vice Pres., Hyman B. Levine of Burlington, Sec.-Treas.,
and an Executive Committee of the Officers plus Harold
Johnson of Barre and Maurice Walbridge of Rutland. The
Constitution and By-Laws were sent to the National
Association of Approved Basketball Officials, and a Charter
was granted to our Vermont State Board of Approved
Basketball Officials on Jan. 14, 1929.
The Board was organized for the purpose of
standardizing the playing rules and officiating through
interpretation meetings and games. It is interesting to note
that in our existence as a Board, we have had just four
Secretary-Treasurers, Hyman "Bumps" Levine, who served from
1928 to 1934, Roger Sheridan, who served from 1934 to 1980,
Dick MacKenzie, who served continuously from 1980 until
current Secretary-Treasurer Mike Boulerice assumed the
position.
Examinations are given to new applicants every year and
although many fail to pass, our Board has grown to more than
300 approved members. Today, the Board is recognized by
every College and High School in the State as well as all
leagues and clubs.
The Board feels it has done remarkable work to standardize
the playing and interpretation of the rules and bringing
Basketball Officiating to the position it now enjoys. |
